MENORCA TRAVEL GUIDE: A GUIDE TO THE (ALMOST) MILLION REASONS WE LOVE THIS ISLAND

Our Favourite Island Gems

Since spending two months living on Menorca in 2024 and now having hosted two yoga retreats here, this island has truly captured our hearts.

Whether you’re joining us for our Island Wonder Menorca yoga retreat in June or September, or simply are dreaming up your own trip, we hope this guide helps you explore the magic of this island.

The Island: A Little Overview

Menorca may be smaller than its Mallorca and Ibiza yet there’s so much to explore. The island has a deep, rich history that includes ancient stone monuments known as talaiots (you’ll see them scattered across the island), two picturesque harbours, and some of the clearest water we’ve ever swum in!

The coastline is especially unique. The north is first of all less crowded (whihc can be good to know if you come here in hihg season July-Aug), is wild and rugged with dramatic cliffs and beaches with red or yellowish sand. The south is busier and is all about picture-perfect white sandy beaches with turquoise water.

They’re each beautiful in their own way — we definitely recommend exploring both if you can!

One more reason we love this island: the Camí de Cavalls, a historic 185 km trail that loops the entire coastline. Originally built as a coastal patrol route, it’s now a beautiful walking and hiking path offering incredible sea views and access to hidden beaches. Literally wherever on the island you go to the coast you can either turn right or left - you’ll have an amazing hike awaiting you guaranteed!

SON SAURA BEACH

Beaches & Coves

Here are a few of our favorites, from peaceful hidden coves to iconic turquoise bays:

South Coast

Son Saura. A wide, sandy beach that’s worth the extra walk from the parking lot. Keep going to the second bay for more peace and fewer people.

Cala des Talaier. A stunning little cove you can reach on foot from Son Saura — absolutely worth it.

Cala Sa Olla (near Binibeca Vell). A local spot with rocky edges and deep, clear water. Perfect for snorkeling and sunrise dips.

Binisafuller. Crystal-clear water and fine white sand — calm, swimmable, and peaceful.

Binigaus. A spacious beach with soft sand and beautiful surroundings — ideal for longer swims.

Santo Tomás. Easy to access and a great starting point for walking to nearby beaches.

Macarella & Macarelleta. Famous for a reason — stunning turquoise waters surrounded by pine forests. Get there early if you’re driving.

Cala Turqueta. Another postcard beach with vivid blue water and soft white sand.

MACARELLETA BEACH

North Coast

Algairens. A peaceful beach in two parts — the second bay is often quieter and has an untouched feel.

Cala Pregonda. One of the most unique beaches on the island, with reddish-golden sand and dramatic rocks. A 20–30 min walk to reach, but so worth it.

Cala Morell. A lovely cove with clear waters and great for swimming or cliffside sunbathing.

Cavalleria. Wild, red cliffs and open sea views — unspoiled and full of character.

Towns, Markets & Cafés

Ciutadella is our favorite town on the island. It’s the kind of place where you can easily spend a slow afternoon wandering the narrow cobbled streets, browsing small boutiques, and soaking up the rhythm of local life. Don’t miss the vibrant local market, where you can find everything from fresh produce to handmade goods — and keep an eye out for traditional avarcas sandals, a Menorcan staple you’ll want to take home.

The old harbor (Puerto Antiguo de Ciutadella) is especially beautiful at sunset — a lovely spot to enjoy a pomada, Menorca’s refreshing gin and lemonade drink.

For coffee or brunch, we love Tap Room and Ulisses, but our absolute favorite for dinner is Maramao — a warm, welcoming spot with delicious fusion tapas and a cozy vibe. Their sister restaurant Margot Locanda is equally charming. And for something a little different, Nipa Tasca Japonesa serves great Japanese tapas in an intimate setting.

CIUTADELLA

Mahón

Mahón is the island’s capital and home to the largest natural harbor in the Mediterranean. It’s lively without being overwhelming — a great place to explore for a few hours or spend a full day soaking up the mix of culture, history, and relaxed seaside charm.

A visit to the local market and the old part of town is definitely worth it, offering a glimpse into everyday Menorcan life and plenty of charming streets to wander.

Be sure to visit the Hauser & Wirth art gallery on Isla del Rey, which you can reach by a short shuttle boat from the port. Afterward, enjoy a meal at the Cantina restaurant right by the water — such a treat.

For coffee or a casual bite, we love Pipet Café — always friendly, always good. If you’re looking for something local and flavorful, try Can Vermut for vermouth and small plates in a cozy setting, or head to Oysters Menorca if you're in the mood for something fresh and a little fancy.

Mahón has a more urban feel than Ciutadella, but still retains that relaxed Menorcan pace — perfect for strolling, people-watching, and savoring the views.

Sant Lluís & binibeca vell

Sant Lluís is a small village with a relaxed, local vibe. Carrer de Sant Luis is especially cute and worth a stroll, perfect for soaking up the local atmosphere. Clementina Gastro Bar is one of our favorites here, serving creative Mediterranean dishes in a warm, intimate setting.

Just a short drive away, Binibeca Vell (this is where we used to live in 2024!) is a picturesque, whitewashed fishing village with a super cute little harbour. It has a quaint little old-fashioned mall area with cafés, local shops, and a bar — perfect for wandering and enjoying a relaxed, tourist-friendly atmosphere. We especially like El Patio!
